Bronze and Welded Steel

I began my career as a figurative sculptor.  In this body of abstracted work, I find that I have used much from my classical training.  I conceive of these pieces as “standing figures” with a front and back and exhibiting gesture.  But these work are not as concerned with the human condition as were my earlier works.  They are more about the kind of forms that can be made by a sharp blade cutting into soft wood: and how they are transformed by being cast directly into bronze.  The pieces become like ‘human-made’ fossils.

Another unifying aesthetic to this body of work is its totemic presentation.  The space I work with is that of extreme verticality.  Because the pieces are for the most part tall and thin, I have found it imperative to incorporate the base into the work (they are free standing and easily moved).
